Tarneit is located in Greater Melbourne, Victoria, Australia at the foothills of the Great Dividing Range. It is situated approximately 25 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, 23 kilometres south-east of Melbourne’s secondary commercial centre of Ferntree Gully, and 45 kilometres south-east of Melbourne’s secondary business district of Mordialloc. It also near Werribee for it is only 8minute drive from the city. At the 2011 census, Tarneit had a population of 5,638. The rural centre is surrounded by the suburbs of Tarneit and Woodend, which together have a population of 7,484.

It is also home to the Tarneit Vineyard which has a number of historic buildings including the original winery, the visitor centre and the cellar door.
