The name Somerville was in use by the early 1800s. It was named after the family of John Somerville (1780 – 1822), a Scotsman who arrived in the colony in 1805, worked as a carpenter, and established a sawmill on the banks of the Dandong River in 1819.

The Somervilles lived in the nearby settlement of Somerville Cottage. The family had already been granted the land on which the settlement of Somerville was built. John’s son-in-law, George Moffat, also had a sawmill on the Dandong River in 1838 and the settlement of Somerville was probably a Moffat-Somerville run joint venture.
