Subdivision of the Addington area began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the area’s population fell from 8,000 in 1901 to 6,300 by 1930. The population increased to 7,000 in the 1940s but decreased again to 6,000 by 1981. Since the late 20th century, Addington has been home to a large ageing and retirement population. As of 2016, the population was 7,444.
